If you're like me, you watched about 2 episodes of Netflix's The Queen's Gambit and immediately decided you wanted to become a chess grandmaster yourself. Something about a very period piece wrapped in a captivating story really spoke to people - whether the subject was about chess or perhaps board strategy - it was going to start a trend. And it's not uncommon for a global series to spark a trend of new hobbies, interests and consumers online. I can see Google Trends spike in October/November 2020 right after the release of the Thanksgiving premiere.

And the data is there to support it. The Queen's Gambit premiered in late 2020, and taking a look at Google Trends from here to now, "The Queen's Gambit" premiered in the previous period shows a very noticeable spike in search activity for "chessboard."
